Madame B. nous a posé la question suivante:

je recherche un livre en anglais facile à lire pour débutant,
avec éventuellement des aides en vocabulaire.
Ce que j'aimerais c'est quelque chose de distrayant,en cette
période de vacances, mais qui m'apporterait quand même
quelque chose.
Pourriez-vous me donner quelques titres avec les références
exactes afin que je puisse le commander chez mon libraire.

Voici notre réponse:

J'ai retrouvé ce que je cherchais pour vous: il s'agit des
"Oxford Bookworms - Black Series" (vous les trouverez à la
FNAC).

"Oxford Bookworms take students through six stages towards
real reading in English."
Ces livres vous mènent à la lecture en anglais en six étapes.
 
Etape 1: 400 mots,
étape 2: 700 mots,
étape 3: 1000 mots,
etc.
 
Par exemple, pour l'étape 1 :
 
- The Elephant Man, de Tim Vicary
- The Monkey's Paw, de W. W. Jacobs
- Under the Moon, de Rowena Akinyemi
- The Phantom of the Opera, de Jennifer Bassett

Au niveau 2, des adaptations de classiques ont été réalisés:

- Robinson Crusoe, de Daniel Defoe
- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, de Lewis Carroll
 
Ces livres comportent un petit glossaire des mots
"difficiles" pour lesquels une explication existe en anglais.
Vous ne trouverez du vocabulaire traduit en français que dans
les oeuvres originales et d'un niveau avancé.

Charging through the Gulf of Mexico as it heads for
Florida's West Coast, Hurricane Charley is living up to its
reputation. Strong winds preceding its arrival have already
hit the shores, which hundreds of thousands of residents
and tourists have been urged to leave. In Key West, skies
darkened and power went out early on Friday.

Charley is expected to turn into a major hurricane as it
nears the Tampa area - it could be the worst storm there
since 1921. One person was killed as Charley hit Jamaica on
Thursday, before striking western Cuba, where howling
winds uprooted trees and tore away roofs before coming
ashore on the south coast.

Authorities imposed a black-out on the capital Havana and
its province to avoid any electrical accidents. Now, it's
the American people who are bracing themselves for the
onslaught - in total, 6.5 million people lie in the storm's
potential path.

Charlie Watts, drummer van de Rolling Stones, lijdt aan
keelkanker en volgt radiotherapie in Londen. Dit maakte
de woordvoerder van de Britse rockgroep zaterdag bekend. 
 
De keelkanker werd vastgesteld in juni tijdens een kleine
operatie. Sindsdien heeft Watts al vier weken radiotherapie
achter de rug en heeft hij nog twee weken te gaan. Watts
wacht af tot hij helemaal genezen is om later op het jaar
terug aan de slag te gaan met de rest van de groep, aldus
de woordvoerder. 
 
De 63-jarige Watts heeft niet meer gerookt sinds de jaren
zestig. Volgens zijn omgeving maakt hij het goed en gaat
hij te voet van zijn huis naar het ziekenhuis in Chelsea,
in het zuidoosten van Londen, waar hij verzorgd wordt.
Watts heeft in 1985 ook zijn eigen jazzband 'The Tentet'
opgericht.
